Topping the global list of the Most Beautiful Island in the world, Palawan is home to nature’s finest destinations. I’ve had the opportunity to even reach the last of the LAST FRONTIER (Balabac) of this spectacular group of islands and I just can’t get enough. In this travel guide, we will highlight the beauty of my most favorite destination in this part of the paradise and that is, CORON, PALAWAN.

My highest-engaged photo on Instagram yet. Click on the photo to follow!

I have been asked countless times about which do I like better- Coron or El Nido? It’s a neck and neck battle but Coron wins it for me. Fond of water activities than beach bumming, the former has so much more to offer. From coves, lakes, coral gardens, white sand beaches, sandbars and the out-of-this-world glory of the underwater world, Coron is out there to fill you in! and of course, who wouldn’t want to experience safari in Calauit where you can mingle with Zebras and Giraffes in the wild?

Into the deep.

Don’t get me wrong, El Nido is gorgeous. It would not have been hailed as the most beautiful island in the world without a valid reason. It’s just that Im more of the adventurer side than an island-trotter. Haha!

The last time I was in Coron was some 6 years ago. Travel was not mainstream yet and it was apparent in Coron town, as well. There weren’t a lot of room and restaurant options back then. I’ve always imagined it as a sleepy town. To my surprise, the new Coron is highly-progressive. One good variable to determine if a place is developing is the infrastructure situation and this one is very noticeable during my recent visit in Coron. Hotels, inns and restaurants sprawled like blooms around town.

GEOGRAPHY

Taray! May pa Geography si Mayor! HAHAHA! No, this is for the reason that most of us always get it wrong about Coron and Busuanga. So here’s a brief for us to appreciate it better. Both Coron and Busuanga municipalities comprise the Busuanga Island.

BUSUANGA
*This is where the airport is located.
*Tours like Calauit Safari and Black Island is also part of Busuanga.

CORON
*This is where the magic happens as Coron is the tourism capital. Most of the attractions are here.

HOW TO GET THERE?

The popular entry to get to Coron is the BUSUANGA AIRPORT. From the airport, it will take an hour ride to get to Coron proper. However, since we mentioned earlier that Coron has been progressing, there are new means to get there now.

FLIGHTS TO CORON

There are daily flights from three airlines in the Philippines which will bring you to Coron. You may choose your departure points from Manila, Clark and even Cebu. As you know, flight expense takes up a huge chunk of our travel budget. However with the influx of promo fares, you’ll be able to snag a cheap airfare.

For the cheapest airfares to Coron, Palawan: book-here-button

BUSUANGA AIRPORT TO CORON PROPER

There will be barkers offering you a shuttle service to your booked accommodation in Coron as soon as you exit the airport. Travel time takes around 45-minutes. I have been sleeping every single time I was on this route so I don’t really have a picture of how the way to Coron looks! HAHAHA!
Fare is at 150/head but if you’re in a big group, you might want to charter the entire van. Contact Fidel at 0917-555-8840 for your shuttle needs.

EL NIDO TO CORON

Good news for backpackers who plans to travel across Palawan. Coron can now be easily accessed from El Nido with Montenegro Shipping Lines. Check the schedules below grabbed from their Facebook page.

PUERTO PRINCESA TO CORON

There’s also a way to get to Coron from PPS but the trips are limited and takes forever. Hahaha! So if you don’t mind spending so much time in a RORO, then you might want to check 2GO routes.

WHERE TO STAY?

As mentioned, there are a lot of room options in Coron from hotels, hostels and even homestays. The first thing you need to factor in when choosing an accommodation other than the rate is the location. Dorm-type rooms start at 200/night, homestays at 600/night and private rooms at 1,300/night.

Check out Sharon’s Guesthouse for a cheap homestay and the location is walking distance to the commercial areas. I also noticed that Happy Campers Hostel got a nice rating in Booking.com. You might want to check them out on the link below. Rate starts at 350/night.

TOP THINGS TO DO IN CORON

Just like the tours in El Nido, the island activities in Coron are grouped geopgraphically, I suppose. This eases out the planning of itineraries for travelers.

Tour A – CORON ISLAND AND LAKES

• Swim in Kayangan Lake, also known as the Blue Lagoon, which is set among limestone cliffs and is known as the cleanest lake in the Philippines.
• Snap a photo with the iconic view of the Coron backdrop during your short trek to Kayangan Lake.
• Snorkel in the coral garden and explore the thriving corals and marine species of Palawan.
• Relax by the powdery white sands of CYC Beach, where you can also take a dip to swim or snorkel by the crystal clear water.

One of the most photographed spots in Coron.
Kayangan Lake is mesmerizing especially when there’s no one else around.

It could get really creepy down below. 👻
Who else are fans of Game of Thrones here? I AM. NOT.

One day, I’ll know, If I’ll go, there’s no telling how far I’ll go.

Tour B – BARRACUDA LAKE AND LAGOONS

• Swim in Barracuda Lake, a scenic lake surrounded by limestone cliffs located at the north end of Coron Island.
• Enjoy a tasty picnic lunch at the beautiful Banol Beach, a short stretch of white sand beach with pristine waters.
• Snorkel atop the Skeleton Wreck, a sunken fishing boat, and enjoy swimming with the colorful fishes.
• Visit the iconic Twin Lagoon, two saltwater lakes separated by a narrow opening, which invites travelers to cross through for an unforgettable tunnel experience.

Twin Lagoon

Definitely one of my top favorite travel photos. PS. May shorts po ako diyan ah! Wag kayong ano. hahaha!
With waters as tempting as this, you know you can’t resist!
This is the other side of the lagoon. Breathtaking!

BEACH BUM IN THE MYSTICAL BLACK ISLAND

• This is normally part of the Calauit Tour. Right after your safari adventure, you’ll be brought to either Black Island or Pamilacan island for an afternoon swim before heading back to Coron town.

I regret not bringing my drone here because it was raining when we left Calauit. 😢

PULLING OFF A DIY IN CORON

You also have an option to pull a Do-It-Yourself tour when in Coron. You’ll be able to save a bit of cash but try to weigh in the pros and cons. A private tour is ideal if you’re in a big group. It also gives you control of your itinerary and how long are you going stay in one destination. However, you’d have to process this by booking a boat with Calamian Tourist Boat Association located near Lualhati Park. You’d also have to prepare for your own food and pay for the entrance fees and guide fees during the tour. It could get a bit inconvenient especially if you don’t have that much time.

The only tour I suggest you DIY if you’re going solo or in a small group of budget travelers is the town tour to Maquinit and Mt. Tapyas. I’ll discuss the details in the sample itinerary.

SAMPLE ITINERARY WITH EXPENSES

For this travel guide, we assume that you’ll be traveling in a group of at least 4 people and decided to stay in a backpacker hostel. The food allowance will also be limited to 100/meal as we assume that you won’t eat in fancy restaurants and eat at carinderias instead. But hey! If you have the money, FOOD is something you have to enjoy as much as you do with tours!  I’m not a breakfast person so I save my budget and splurge it during dinner.
